Jennie Wu is a SWY Student turned volunteer. She is a perfect example of the impact SWY teachers are having across Nashville. We’re grateful for her showing up for herself and others! Here’s a little about Jennie: 1. How did you find SWY? I was browsing online at a local Reddit forum and ran across a post inquiring about yoga in Nashville. Small World Yoga popped up. Didn’t realize that my local library offered yoga classes! Soon after, I went on the Nashville Public Library website for Edmondson Pike’s yoga classes. 2. What has been the impact of yoga/this SWY class on your own life? Yoga has impacted me so much. It has made me more self aware in finding balance in my life…the calm in the chaos for seeking positivity. I kept showing up every week at Edmondson Pike and little amazing things started to happen. I learned let go of a toxic relationship that no longer served me, checked in with myself by being less reactive at hectic day job, made friends in class where we greet each other with hugs, tried out different yoga classes in other studios, created a daily yoga practice to go to at my own pace, and built better body awareness are some of the things! 3. What made you want to volunteer for SWY after you were a student? After attending Edmondson Pike every week for a year, I wanted to help out in someway since I lived nearby. I’ve the tendency to be really shy around people. I thought it would be good to gradually break out of my comfort zone by interacting with people in the community. 4. What else would you like to share? At last Tuesday’s class at the library, a woman right beside me started to hum and sing the chorus to, “Waterfalls” by TLC while we’re in Waterfall pose. She was thinking what I was thinking and I started to sing along too. I’m all about the 90s music! Little moments like these create a genuine connection in this community, which is a powerful thing in this world. We can get caught up in life forgetting to slow down and enjoy fleeting moments. Yoga is a beneficial pause button for me. If you want to be a larger part of this community, we invite you to give this #GivingTuesday at the studio or online.
